Headed out to Bushes Berry Farm in Venita a few weeks back. Their Shuksan Strawberry beds were laden with fat, sweet berries like I have never seen before. I love Shuksan berries for their true strawberry flavor and dark red flesh. They are the best strawberry for preserving in my mind. Not so good for keeping in the fridge for fresh eating unless you eat them up in a day or two.
The farm itself was well cared for and dotted with these fabulous old oak trees. You can’t really tell from the pictures, but the diameter on the trees is around 4-5 feet. It is a testament to the farmers’ respect for the land to keep these venerable giants standing.
Many of the u-pick farms I visit have different ways to set up their operation. I likes this simple assemble of buckets on this flatbed trailer. Something about the primary colors against the weathered wood was very pleasing. Perhaps a reminder of the childish joy that can come from picking a load of juicy strawberries.
Some of the local teens who operate the u-pick stand. Farms like this offer young folks an opportunity to get good sensible job experience working point of sale duties and the customer service involved with showing folks the field layout etc. This is a huge benefit to the community.
All in all a pleasant and fruitful visit out to Bushes Berry Farm. Will definitely go next year.
